Jazz Vespers with Gabriel Mark Hasselbach and Miles Black

On Sunday, October 18, at 4 pm, we held a Jazz Vespers online. The vespers featured two amazing local jazz musicians: Gabriel Mark Hasselbach -  trumpet/flute/flugelhorn - and Miles Black, piano. Rev Sophia Ducey shared readings and prayers.

Gabriel Mark Hasselbach is a well-known award-winning jazz stylist, playing the unique combination of trumpet, flute, flugelhorn, EVI, and valve trombone. He has over 15 albums to his name, a JUNO award, and 'Album of the Year' and 'Instrumentalist of the Year' wins at the Canadian Smooth Jazz awards, as well as 10 Billboard charting hits and 3 JazzWeek hits. Gabriel can walk a fine line between contemporary and classic idioms, incorporating both effortlessly into a smooth and seamless stage show. His influences range from classic artists like Blue Mitchell and Chet Baker, to contemporaries like Chris Botti and Rick Braun.

Based in Vancouver, Miles Black is one of Canada's most accomplished and in-demand jazz pianists. He is also sought after as an arranger, producer, composer, session musician, guitarist, vocalist, bassist, saxophonist, songwriter, and musical theatre director. Adding to that, he has worked as a music therapist and collegiate music instructor. Black grew up in a home filled with music of his father, a guitarist, and his musician friends. He started his music studies on piano when he was eleven. By the age of 18, he had worked professionally as a versatile musician. He credits his success to the support and encouragement of both his piano teacher George Essihos and his parents.
