An acclaimed jazz pianist based in Vancouver, Miles Black is also sought after as an arranger, producer, composer, session musician, guitarist, vocalist, bassist, saxophonist, songwriter, and musical theatre director.  Adding to that, he has worked as a music therapist and collegiate music instructor.

Black grew up in a home filled with music of his father, a guitarist, and his musician friends. As a child, Miles wanted to play an instrument with their father and started his music studies on piano when he was eleven. By the age of 18, he had worked professionally as a versatile musician. He credits his success to the support and encouragement of both his piano teacher George Essihos, and his parents.

Since 1993, Miles Black has proudly been a member of the Oliver Gannon Quartet, performing keyboard duties with Oliver Gannon, a Juno-award winning jazz guitarist. He has also been a member of Trilogy, with Bill Coon on guitar, and Jodi Proznick on bass – the group fashioned after the great jazz trios of Oscar Peterson and Nat King Cole. Black’s newest projects include working as pianist/composer with The Mike Allen Quartet, group also known as the Faculty Jazz Collective at Western Washington University, where they perform as musical mentors for the jazz students. At the present Miles Black is also co-leading a modern jazz quartet Altered Laws, with the saxophonist and flautist Tom Keenlyside.

As a prolific composer and writer, Miles estimates that he had written around 8,000 songs, of which more than 400 with vocalist and lyricist Glenda Rae.
