Christmas Homework

Homework! How can I give you Christmas homework,
on the third Sunday of Advent?

Why we only have three candles lit,
Hope, Peace, Joy... we still need love... don’t we?

And what about December 24th......
When we everything feels special... sacred even!

We haven’t heard the stories of the shepherds, or angels.... and the Gloria!
What about the stable... and Mary and Joseph as they prepare?

Homework is never welcome... never seems fair....
But Christmas homework now...during Advent??

The Prophet Isaiah talks about being taught Holy ways, and walking the paths of God.
So yes... here is your homework....

-stand in the light of the brightest star ...
-hear angel voices, in every Carol and song ...
-celebrate the fact that it was ordinary shepherds,
that first heard about the birth ...
-imagine you are holding the baby and match your breath with the babe’s rhythm.

Stand in the light of the brightest star.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT STARS?
HOW DO YOU STAND IN THE LIGHT?

Hear angel voices, in every Carol and song.
WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT ANGELS?
WHO ARE YOUR ANGELS?

Celebrate the fact that it was ordinary shepherds, that first heard about the birth.
WHERE HAVE YOU SEEN THE SACRED IN THE ORDINARY?

Imagine you are holding the baby. Match your breath with the babe’s rhythm.
TELL ME WHY CHILDREN ARE SO LOVED!

Christmas homework begins now, because God is among us!
Our Advent waiting and preparing and action, invites us to stand in the light,
to share angel stories, to name the sacred in the ordinary, and to treat
everyone we meet with the tenderness we offer a baby.

Now is the time! Your homework is due. The Prophet Isaiah has spoken.
The world is ready and longs for Holy Ways!
